Kurt Elling feat. Modern Art Orchestra

Posted by Kornel Fekete-Kovacs

Bartók Béla National Concert Hall

5 March 2013, 7.30 pm – 10.00 pm

Kurt Elling – vocal, Laurence Hobgood – piano, John McLean – guitar, Clark Sommers – bass, Kendrick Scott – drums

A four-octave baritone voice, breathtaking virtuosity and the broadest spectrum of emotions: the Grammy Award-winning Kurt Elling has been voted male vocalist of the year on innumerable occasions by a variety of juries, among them the Jazz Journalists Association and critics of the magazine DownBeat. Having received at least one Grammy nomination for each of his previous nine albums, on this occasion Elling’s quintet will present material from the singer’s latest record, 1619 Broadway: The Brill Building Project , accompanied by the Modern Art Orchestra led by Kornél Fekete-Kovács.

What came out of the Brill Building between the 1930s and the 1970s? Songs by popular music’s best-loved East Coast writers, among them the Burt Bacharach/Hal David and Sammy Cahn/James Van Heusen song-writing duos, Neil Diamond, Nat King Cole, Paul Simon, Johnny Mercer and Duke Ellington, the biggest hits of the swing, rock ’n’ roll and doo-wop eras, the compositions on which several generations in both America and the Old Continent grew up. An unusual choice, perhaps? Certainly, but then we’ve come to expect this from Elling, who takes all the songs which we would never expect to find together on one record and moulds them in his own image, and in his own compellingly individual style.

This concert is at once a showcase for the new record and much more besides, as Elling’s vocalese singing style conjures up unique and unrepeatable moments. And let us not forget that the sparkling edifice of sound to be heard this evening will be constructed in its full glory with the help of one of the most exciting and ambitious big bands on the Hungarian music scene.
